Gay Pride in the Plaza 2007 Part 1

Download this episode (12 min)
It was Sunday, July 8 at Mission Plaza, SLO. The event is called “Gay Pride in the Plaza.”

It was an afternoon featuring music and drag. There was a children’s play area, climbing wall, bounce house, dunk tank, mechanical bull, face painting, and arts & crafts for kids. There were many vendor booths selling different trinkets and rainbow paraphernalia, in addition to the food and alcohol.

I want to be really honest with you – I didn’t want to go. I found out about this event on Friday. I began praying. Even then, I was fearful at just the thought of going. I share this with you because I believe it’s healthy to be fearful. Our fear causes you to pray that God would give you compassion for all people, pray for strength, and most importantly, pray that God alone would receive all the praise, glory, and honor.

So needless to say, this event was out of my comfort zone for sure – but a good learning experience. I had never been to anything like this before. My flesh was saying, “no!” But I was compelled to go. It’s not about me having a new experience or being uncomfortable. It’s about allowing compassion swallow my fears and reach out to these people.

I thank God for my brothers Josh and Andy. We arrived at the Pride event at 3pm. As we walked in to the festivities, I began to tremble – literally. I guess all three of us knew deep down inside that this was not going to be easy. But praise be to God, He got us there. As we walked through the crowds of people, I began looking at there faces, and praying, ‘Father, open their eyes, help me to love them, be glorified, bind the “strong man”’.

Andy pulled out these blue WOMAN+WOMAN & MAN+MAN tracts above.

You can purchase these tracts at: http://www.evangelismteam.com/

The front of the tract catches their eye for sure. People were asking us for more. It was nice to have something that they seemed to be interested in. At least it helped break the ice and get into the all-important conversation. Below is the message on the back of the tract:

Homosexuality has been under attack for some time now. Since the 1990s, when same sex marriage became an issue, the media ridiculed and publicized it in such a way, they forced us to take sides. As this caused such a stir in society, an even more important issue was being overlooked because we allowed ourselves to be caught up in the here-and-now. The more important issue is, what happens in the “there-after?” And because the here-and-now is only temporary, the there-after is worth looking into. Listen to what the Bible says. “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” When you die, you will stand before God and be expected to give a detailed account of your life. On that day, how will you do? Here is a quick test. Have you ever told a lie (even once)? Have you ever stolen anything (the value is irrelevant)? Have you ever used God’s name in vain (this is called blasphemy)? If you have done these things, you have sinned against God and He sees you as a lying, blasphemous thief. On Judgment Day, you will be guilty of breaking His laws, the 10 Commandments, and end up in hell. But God doesn’t want that. The Bible says, “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Simply put, you broke the law and Christ died to pay your fine. Then He rose from the dead and defeated death. If you will repent (turn from your sin) and put your trust in Jesus Christ, He will forgive your sin, take your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh to desire the things of God and grant you the gift of everlasting life. Isn’t that amazing? So, repent today. God will never let you down. Then read your Bible every day and obey what you read. See John 3:16 and John 14:21. God bless you!

We met a group of nice young ladies near the Creekside Stage. It appeared that there was at least 6-7 in the group. I regret we didn’t get all their names. However, Jen was sitting on the grass, Hilary and Sarah was standing near her. When Andy initially asked if they would be interested in being interviewed they said no. But Jen seemed very interested. Thank you Jen! In this Podcast and a few others, you'll hear Andy leading the interview.

I took a picture of the group but my lame camera lost it - I’m sorry ladies.

Christian, please pray for these young ladies.
